Why Invest in DC Charging?

The Evolution: The UK Vehicle Market is Changing. Seismic change is taking place in the way we travel. The UK has taken a world lead in the switch from petrol cars to electric. But is the infrastructure in the UK
keeping up?

What is the plan?

The Government is committed to end the sale of new fully petrol /diesel vehicles by 2030, and for all new cars and vans to be fully zero emission at the tailpipe by 2035.

What’s Happening on the Ground?

In May 2023, 16.9% of all new car registrations were electric vehicles, with 24,513 new electric cars registered.

What About The Infrastructure?

To meet demand, the UK needs a charging infrastructure to match. We need chargers for those on the move – at offices, motorways, shopping centres, etc – and for people who don’t have off private off-street parking. However, we are behind schedule bigtime, and the UK needs more superchargers – that can charge a car in 30 min or less. As reported recently by the RAC, the Government looks unlikely to meet its target of having six or more rapid or ultra-rapid electric vehicle chargers at every motorway service area in England by 2023.

Why Invest Now?

A change in how we travel: Fancy owning your own charging stations? Supercharges just require a connection to the electric grid. And if you have land in the right location, you could have your own network of charging stations. Now is the time to break into the market. EV charging is a whole different game – people will be looking for the most local, convenient and fastest place to charge.

Customers on the go will be hunting for superfast chargers, so they can get on with their journey. Your charger will be visible on Google Maps, Waze and Zapmap. The faster the charger, the more clients it will pull in.

What Kind Of Sites Are Suitable?

Proximity to urban areas is likely to more easily allow for the required connection to the electrical network.

The main criteria for building a successful supercharger station is location. It could be a site that is located near main roads or where there is through traffic. Alternatively, it could be a site that is located nearby to offices, shopping centres or commercial areas, which would be used by people wanted to charge their car while shopping. Alternatively, it could be a site that is located nearby to offices, shopping centres or commercial areas, which would be used by people wanted to charge their car while shopping.

What About Size?

As far as size is concerned, two things need to be considered.

  1. The number of parking spaces: This could even be just two parking spaces.
  2. Ease of access: Cars need to be able to enter, park and then exit without obstruction. Space for cars to queue
while waiting to charge is also ideal.

What Will It Cost To Install Such A Charger?

The figures look good, but what is the investment cost?

It’s difficult to predict accurately the costs involved, as much depends on the site location and the condition and capacities of the local electric network.

As An Example:

Don’t forget, these figures are independent of income that can be generated from membership fees, advertising, or partnerships with other organizations that might offer fixed payments. Additionally, depending on location and planning permission, you could develop shopping areas to benefit customers who are waiting for their vehicle to charge.

So What Are You Waiting For?

If you have off-street land suitable for public access, you could potentially generate substantial income from this emerging industry.
